Media role questioned

The role of the media in combating violence against women (VAW) was greatly questioned during the National Strategy Workshop on using ICTS to end VAW in Uganda. Some participants pointed out that most of the media portrays women only in terms of sexuality, that is, what they can do to look good, how to keep their men happy and such related aspects of their lives. It was argued that such topics are not developmental to the women and their position in society.

It was also pointed out that a number of times Civil Society Organizations write articles bringing out developmental issues that concern women however, before they are published they are usually edited and some crucial points are left out. Davis Weddi from the New Vision emphasized that such articles are published at a cost and of course some editing has to be done in line with the publishing house’s policies.
