Breaking with tradition, African women dare to denounce violence through digital storytelling
Violence against women was the theme of a recent digital storytelling workshop organised by APC-Africa-Women and Women’sNet, held in Durban, South Africa from 25 to 29 August 2007. APC-Africa-Women is the African regional programme of the Association for Progressive Communications Women’s Networking Support Programme (APC WNSP), an international network of women who support women’s networking for social change and women’s empowerment through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Presenting evaluation results with creativity
Training people to use GEM (Gender Evaluation Methodology) is always a challenge. There are lots of expectations about the results of this training. For the trainer, the usual finding is that evaluators very seldom take a gender perspective into account when planning a project or considering its results, unless they work in a gender unit or in a project that is already committed to women´s issues or related to equity goals.
Women in the African Newsroom
Kristin Palitza of Agenda Magazine was the chair of a discussion panel on gender and the media today, September 11 2007, in Grahamstown, South Africa. Unlike most of the other panels at Highway Africa, this one lined up three women and no man. A mistake, by some participants’ standards but certainly a colourful and rather critical one in an event where only 15 out of 55 speakers are women.
Challenges of content within the blogosphere in Africa
The issue of content production and representativeness is important within African news production. In her presentation at the 2007 Digital Citizen Indaba conference in Grahamstown on Sunday, the chairperson of LinuxChix in South Africa, Anna Badimo, highlighted the need for new approaches in African news production. APC Africa-Women co-coordinator Sylvie Niombo explained that content in the mainstream media ignores lived realities of women.

WENT Africa Training in Digital Storytelling to End Violence Against Women
"I never knew technology could be so useful to transform ones life until after the 5 day workshop on 'Digital Story Telling'. Seriously there was more to this than just telling a story." - Participant WENT 2007
Women came with their stories from Zimbabwe, Congo, Mali, Gambia, Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, and South Africa.
APC Africa Women in partnership with Women'sNet hosted this year's Women's Electronic Networking Training for women who document - as content developers, librarians, archivists, journalists, mediators, translators, information activists - the lives of women affected by violence in Africa.
Women developed short videos reflecting their experiences as women documenters. The group examined the power dimensions of story telling and how to retain authenticity of voice - one's own and those of the people whose stories are being documented, preserved or disseminated.
Media in central African conflicts: a difficult choice between impartiality and propaganda
Information has become a powerful weapon that can be manipulated during times of conflict. This was seen again in central Africa between 1993 and 1994, as revealed by Sylvie Niombo of APC-Africa-Women in her analysis of the work, The media and conflicts in Central Africa, edited by Marie-Soleil Frère and published in 2007 by the Panos Institute of Paris.
In summary, the book The media and conflicts in central Africa has the merit of providing detailed information on the role of the media in times of conflict and social crisis, and identifying deterrents to freedom of expression. In this latest search for professionalism, journalists need support to redress the situation. The public, tired of partisan and extremist media, tend much more towards impartial and “messianic” types of media, supposed to restore hope. However, our analysis of the book showed up insufficient information on the electronic press. A single case of action against the electronic press was mentioned in the book. Then, the influence of numerous partisan websites, which have been created especially by those in exile or the diaspora, whose reality is not covered by the book.
Are male and female journalists affected differently by repression and conflicts? Is there a feminist press in times of conflict? What are the weaknesses of women’s professional associations? With regard to the contribution by international organisations to the media sector, have there been any gender considerations? These are interesting issues which could have been looked into.
Mental gym at the GEM exchange
GEM speaks to people, said Sarah Earl, an evaluation specialist attending a workshop to improve what’s been coined as the Gender Evaluation Methodology. More than an evaluation theory, GEM "is a development theory," commented Earl from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. "It [indicates the] stand on gender, women and technology, participation, women's equality, development,” added the senior programme officer at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
