GEM is an on-line guide and available for use by any one who is interested in evaluating their ICT initiative from a gender perspective. As the APC WNSP developed GEM it also trained people from around the world in the use of the Tool and in carrying out gender evaluations of ICTs. As a result, we have a pool of skilled facilitators and consultants in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the European Union to offer GEM Service and Support.
Although everything needed to carry out the Gender Evaluation Methodology for ICTs and Internet is included in this site, organizations and agencies have also opted to obtain additional support from the APC WNSP and it's team of facilitators and consultants to introduce gender and ICT perspectives to their work and evaluation processes.
GEM Services include:
- Training for organization members on the use of GEM and carrying out gender evaluation of ICT projects
- Introductory workshops on gender and ICTs
- Introductory workshops on gender evaluation of ICTs
- On-site or on-line consultancy for on-going evaluations using GEM
- Application of the GEM framework in planning, research, and assessment of development initiatives
Introduction to Gender and ICTs
Introductory workshops to GEM and gender and ICT issues have been labelled as "eye-openers" for many organizations and are useful to strengthen community or board member support for a gender evaluation of an ICT initiative. Our section on Conducting GEM Workshops lays out the importance of such overviews in successful evaluations, and offers you some simple exercises and presentations to help you carry out a workshop on your own or accompanied by a GEM consultant.
Gender and ICT Consultancy Projects
GEM team members have also successfully applied GEM in gender and ICT consultancy projects for multilateral, donor and other international agencies. GEM has been used as a framework in:
- Mainstreaming gender in national ICT policy development plans
- Integrating a gender perspective in e-governance and political participation programs
- Developing a framework for gender and ICT research
Recently, APC WNSP members have also been contracted to develop gender evaluation and monitoring plans for two ICT project global small grants programs. As you review the list of GEM Consultancies, you'll see how it has been adapted in a variety of ICT scenaries to gain insight into gender and ICT issues.
