Exploratory Research on ICTS and Sexuality research gathering

From June 7 – 11, South Asian APC member Bytes for All will unite fellow APC members and women activists alike for a joint event, funded by the APC’s Member Exchange Fund. Representatives from several APC organisations will meet in Islamabad to attend a workshop on digital storytelling and learn how to Take Back the Tech! to end violence against women. This Feminist Tech Exchange will unite 12 – 15 activist women so they can be trained to further train others in the Asian region.

Capacity-Building of ‘Women Living Under Muslim Law’ on Strategic E-Campaigning led by APC Africa Women members

The goal of this training project is to enhance the effectiveness of local partners’ advocacy and communication strategy in their contexts. Their local campaigns will attract, reach and mobilize the support of a wider range of audiences through their application of learned communication skills and tools in their respective advocacy projects. The specific objectives of this project are:

The knowledge-sharing workshop will be a space to enable the 15 grantees to share outcomes as well as to discuss best practices and lessons learned. It will also be used to gather case studies and stories to feed into the ongoing programmes of partner institutions, as well as for GenARDIS’ own evaluation process. The workshop methodology will be interactive, creative and use different methodologies to encourage sharing and challenge grantees to interrogate their own learnings’.

The Gender Research in Africa into ICTs for Empowerment (GRACE) is a project that was initiated in 2005 with an aim to provide context specific data on how women in Africa use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to improve their lives, barriers that prevent them from accessing and utilisation of ICTs and how they surmount these barriers. With support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), GRACE evolved into an African network of Gender and ICT researchers involving 14 research teams in 12 different African countries including Uganda.

The Digital Storytelling Workshop planned for the Second GEM Global Exchange will bring GEM adaptors from all over the world together to share their stories of transformation using GEM.

The APC WNSP has proposed a session at the fourth gathering of the Internet Governace Forum to be held in Egypt this year. Entitled “Content regulation, surveillance and sexuality rights – Privacy, Agency & Security”.

The year 2010 marks the 15th year of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA). It has been half a generation since all member states of the United Nations agreed by consensus to act for Equality, Development and Peace in 12 critical areas of concern. The Asia Pacific NGO Forum highlights women NGO’s innovative and successful initiatives on the critical areas of concern of the BPFA as well as on UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and other human rights instruments.

A gathering of about 250 women from all over the Philippines will be held at Miriam College in Quezon City. The gathering will collectively assess gains, best practices and innovations, continuing and emerging challenges in implementing the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) in the Philippine setting. The resulting program of action will serve as an input to the Asia-Pacific NGO Forum on the Beijing Plus 15.

The Foundation for Media Alternatives, in partnership with the APC WNSP, is hosting this Round Table Discussion to talk about how ICTs introduce new facets to the problem of violence against women and girls in the Philippines and at the same time provide opportunities to help end violence.

The Round Table Discussion is one of the initiatives of the APC WNSP project “Strengthening women’s strategic use of ICTs to combat violence against women and girls”. The project is being implemented in 12 countries with the support of the Dutch government’s MDG3 Fund.

WOUGNET, in collaboration with the APC WNSP is implementing the “Strengthening Women’s Strategic Use of Information and Communications Technologies to Combat Violence against Women and Girls project” in Uganda. The project builds on the APC WNSP’s work on VAW and ICTs and is aimed at helping women participants negotiate the fraught terrain of the new digital landscape in which ICTs hold out both the promise of greatly increased freedoms and also the growing concerns about privacy and security.

As one of the 12 countries involved in the APC WNSP project “Strengthening Women’s Strategic Use of Information and Communications Technologies to Combat Violence against Women and Girls” supported by the MDG3 Fund, DRC will hold a national strategy workshop with representatives from women’s rights organisations working on issues of violence against women (VAW) to inform about the risks and opportunities that ICT represent for VAW and actions to end it.

El Taller Permanente de la Mujer en colaboración con PARM de APC llevará acabo una consulta nacional con más que 40 representantes de organizaciones de mujeres con trabajo en contra de la violencia hacía la mujer, para informar de los riesgos y oportunidades asociadas con el uso de las TIC en este tema de vital importancia para los derechos de las mujeres. Argentina es uno de 12 paises participando en el proyecto “Fortaleciendo el uso estratégico de las TIC por las mujeres para luchar contra la violencia hacia las mujeres y las niñas”, apoyado por el Fondo MDG3.

The Consultation is organised by APC WNSP’s partner in Argentina, Carola Caride of the Taller Permanente de la Mujer.

GEM training workshop for telecentre facilitators and coordinators to be held in Bogotá, Colombia, as part of a gender sensitivity training. The workshop is organised by COLNODO, APC member in Colombia; the Universidad Autónoma de
Occidente based in Cali and the APC WNSP. After the workshop, telecentre staff will are expected to implement changes at local telecentres to address gender concerns.

El Intercambio Tecnológico Feminista reune a feministas de distintos paises en América Latina para debatir sobre feminismo y las tecnologías y capacitarse en nuevas herramientas TIC para su accionar feminista. Inspirado en parte por el primer Intercambio Tecnológico Feminista llevado acabo en Ciudad de Cabo en noviembre del 2008, este Intercambio se llevará acabo después del XI Encuentro Feminista de América Latina y el Caribe donde más que 1500 feministas se reunirán en la Ciudad de México.

The Latin American Feminist Technology Exchange brings together feminists from different countries throughout Latin America to discuss feminism and ICT, and to gain practical skills in new ICT tools to strengthen their feminist advocacy work. Inspired by the APC WNSP FTX in Cape Town in 2008, this FTX will take place after the 11th Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Gathering of more than 1500 feminists in Mexico City.

The International Forum on Women’s Rights and Development is both a conference and a call to action. The largest recurring event of its kind, the AWID Forum brings together women’s rights leaders and activists from around the world every three years to strategize, network, celebrate, and learn in a highly charged atmosphere that fosters deep discussions and sustained personal and professional growth.
