APC Africa Women Member Wins Harambee Prize

Blogs for African Women (BAWo) has taken hold of the Nigerian blogging spirit to strengthen women's activism. Oreoluwa Somolu, BAWo's founder, sees blogging as a way to get women “hooked on technology”, and gain important skills for community and NGO leadership at the same time. Networking for Success, BAWo's second initiative getting women into the blogosphere, has just been awarded an Harambee Small Grant to increase BAWo's collaboration capacity.

ICT and job flexibility: a solution for women's employment?

A recent conference on Women's Perspectives in the Labor Market in the Czech Republic touched on a sore nerve: does the job flexibility of ICTs facilitate women working, or does it enable women's exploitation? The panel on Women and IT brought together researchers, representatives from companies, internet and computer trainers, and women information technology (IT) specialists, all with varying views on this debate.

"Existe la creencia de que las mujeres tenemos una relación lejana con la tecnología, pero ahora hay muchas iniciativas que están buscando la inclusión de la mujer en los proyectos que implican el uso de TICs", comentó Patricia Peña, co-instructora en el Track sobre Producción de Contenidos para el Desarrollo en el Taller de Tecnologías de Redes Internet para América Latina y El Caribe (WALC).

Omolayo Samuel: Climbing above the stereotypes

Omolayo Samuel became a role model for women in ICT when she became the first woman to climb a communications tower in northern Nigeria, and quite likely even in the whole country, on August 1 of this year. She is a member of the Fantsuam Foundation's ICT Department.

Wireless Networking Workshops in Latin America - TRICALCAR

TRICALCAR Project - Weaving wireless community networks for development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The second community wireless workshop will be held in conjunction with APC-member Nodo Tau in Rosario, Argentina. This workshop will train technicians from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. A third workshop will be held in 2008 for the Central America and Mexico. The APC WNSP has developed a module on Gender, Communities and ICTs for the workshop, and women technicians were especially encouraged to apply.

“Women should not only be users of ICT but really have an impact on the way they operate so that it is not women who adapt to the ICTs but the way ICTs are used is adapted to the needs of women.”
