drupal, joomla, actionapps likes and dislikes
i've used quite a number of cms's... php-nuke... post-nuke... actionapps... joomla ... drupal
but i'm only documenting my likes and dislikes with drupal, joomla and actionapps because these are the current cms's that i'm using
drupal 5.x ... just starting to get to know with, but will be using in the current websites that im working on
joomla 1.0.x ... used in last year's website development but am moving into drupal because of limitations i bumped into
actionapps... 'been using since 2004, very flexible, i liked it a lot because it's like a database simplified, but it takes quite sometime to build interactive functionalities on like poll, forums... features for web2.0 (what is web2.0? i myself has to know more about, but simply put it's user-inclusive site ie user interactive websites... wherein a lot of new age cms are built with)
this is only a document of my experience with the cms's, there could be solutions, to my issues, out there that i don't know of. it's an incomplete list i'll build on to this entry from time to time, i just want to get started now as i might forget what i already know (i'm running on low memory already... just too many things to know and remember)
i'd just go by features...
admin interface ... just for me, i find the admin interface of joomla more intuitive than drupal, there's a clear separation of user space and admin interface which i like. the administration navigation of drupal is imbedded in the regular user navigation which to me is quite difficult to access to (ie you need more than 2 clicks to do administration stuff)
forum ... i like joomlaboard, there is an option for you to get emails of recent posts to threads you started with and it's more intuitive to administer forums. the default forum drupal module doesn't provide this functionality. but i like drupal in the case of anti-spam features on comments to forums and because you can activate a captcha to almost all html forms that is publicly visible.
multi-lingual... it's easier to use the multi-lingual module specially i18n than localiser but i'm using localiser (kinda odd noh?) because according to discussions it has better integration with 5.x ... in joomla, i don't like the multi-lingual component... i find it difficult to use... and i had problems with the special character translations in french the encoded articles are encoded in different format than the system messages translations and i have to re-enter the systems messages (grrrr). i think i like more the multi-lingual feature of actionapps better... i don't know (i havent thought enough why) but i got started with the multi-lingual feature in aa much quicker than joomla.
global categories... i like global categories of drupal (taxonomy) and actionapps (categories) better than joomla. in joomla it's not a native feature, i think you have to short-circuit something first before you get to use global categories (and i'm not really successful in short-circuiting it, 'did follow instructions in the resource (**cite here where**) i found but it's not working, it says it's actually for mambo code but will work also for joomla 1.0.x
content structure( data/field elements)... i like actionapps the most in terms of flexible data structure-- it is it's natural make-up being a database. drupal has become more flexible now with the cck module. on joomla, i like the concept of being able to extend the structure of user profile which is not present in drupal. but i like drupal and actionapps because it's possible to associate an uploaded file in the content, which is not present in joomla, there is a resource upload component but it's not integrated in the content (not so straight-forward).
